The British international withdraws from the November marathon major.
Charlotte Purdue has been ruled out of the New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 4, due to a virus she been suffering from in recent weeks.
“Unfortunately 2018 is not finishing how I had hoped and the past few weeks have been some of the hardest,” said Purdue in a social media post. “I have found out that I’ve been suffering with a virus and now I have to take some time off to get better. Because of this, I have also been advised to withdraw from the NYC marathon this year.”
Last month, the 27 year-old was forced to drop out of the European Championships marathon after her hamstring and calf cramped up mid-race, and soon afterwards, announced she aimed to bounce back in New York.
Before her return to the marathon, Purdue aimed to get back to racing ways with a confidence boosting performance at the Great North Run on September 9.
However, circumstances went against the 2:29 marathoner that day too, and with two miles to go in the 13.1 mile race, she fell over due to dizziness.
Purdue was determined to complete the half marathon, and after spending a few minutes in the medical tent, returned to the race and crossed the finish line in 76:49, which was six minutes outside her personal best.
Following the race, she told Fast Running: “I’m having blood tests this week as something is clearly not right at the moment.”
It has been a difficult few months for the British marathoner, who will now hope to rest and recover fully, before turning her focus to a successful 2019.
Britsh athletes set to compete in the New York City Marathon include Chris Thompson, Andrew Davies and Jonny Mellor.
