Liam Lloyd and Sophie Wallis ran the fastest parkrun times in the UK this week (16th October).

Given the location was Swansea parkrun we’re going to assume that Liam Lloyd is the Swansea/Llanelli athlete coached by Adrian Webb. If someone knows otherwise then please do let us know.

If this is the case then it’s brilliant to see the young Welsh athlete back in action. The last two races on Power of 10 are from early 2020, with a PB of 15:13 at Armagh International 5k and a half marathon debut of 74:13 at the Vitality Liverpool Half Marathon. Welcome back Liam, just in time for some cross country hopefully.

Sophie Wallis has already topped the parkrun rankings this summer and does so again on a fast weekend, by just two seconds. 16:47 at Lincoln parkrun is a new parkrun best for the Lincoln Wellington Runner by six seconds. It’s also under Wallis’ 5k best, set at Leicestershire Chase the Sun 5K earlier this year.

Just last weekend also saw a fastest time on leg three of the ERRA Women’s National 4-Stage Relays so we think there is more excitement to come this Autumn.

Cross country stars warming up

Fresh off a 2:22:48 at the London Marathon, which involved a 67:28 first half and a slight positive split that suggest a tough second half, it is good to see Jamie Crowe is just getting warmed up for the cross country season.

The 2020 Scottish XC Champion ran 15:05 at Camperdown parkrun in Dundee, so clearly is recovering well from the 26.2 miles in London.

Philippa Stone of Middlesbrough AC has mostly been on the track this season and has the PBs to show for it, including 2:08.05 for 800m and 4:19.44 for 1500m.

Like Crowe, Stone is another who excels on the cross country, with great success at the National and Northern Champs over the years.

Fast marathoners running fast parkruns

Both third place runners, Rose Harvey and Jordan Skelly, have had strong marathons this year, with Harvey’s 2:29:45 at London Marathon a fantastic jump for the Phil Kissi coached athlete.

Skelly’s 15:06 at York parkrun follows on from a sub 15 minute effort at Market Rasen last weekend, whereas Harvey clocked 17:09 at Evesham parkrun, a little slower than the 16:30 Burgess in July, but October has been a bit busier than normal for marathons.

The fastest parkrun of the week

Both Lincoln and Poole parkruns feature twice this week, with Lincoln grabbing fourth male and fastest female, thus winning this week’s fastest course.

We know the names of the fastest runners and can guess some of the faster events, but which is the fastest?

Instead of just listing the fastest male and female course records we figured we’d try to add a little more depth to this ranking (what better way to spend a Friday night eh?) and include average finishing times too.

So the plan is to include the top 10 male and female course records (which included 15 individual events) and then rank those 15 for average finishing time, otherwise I’d have to open over 700 tabs to check all the average times. Then the position for each ranking would be tallied together to produce the overall positions. Hopefully that makes some sense?

We figured it might mix things up a little bit and not just make it all about where Andy Baddeley, Charlotte Arter and Alex Yee like to run (Bushy Park was still number one, but it was closer than the attendances). So without further ado….

The early rounds

After the Male and Female course record rounds Bushy was well ahead courtesy of a 1st and 4th ranking, but the average time of 27:14 was 3rd, so maybe Dulwich or Cardiff sniffed a chance. Bushy is clearly very fast, but it also has the greatest numbers and parkrun celebrates bringing the average down as a sign of greater inclusivity, which we’re all for.

Second position was just one point behind, with Dulwich’s 2nd and 6th in the course records and then a rapido 25:46 for average time for participants. Given the large numbers turning up each week it’s a really quick time for the average at the south London event. With 9 points in total, to Bushy’s 8, it was a close run thing.

Third, not surprisingly, is home of the female parkrun record, Cardiff parkrun. With 9th for the men, 1st for the women and 5th of the average times with 27:18 it was the speedy chaps who let the team down.

We know there are some really quick boys in Cardiff so next time we do similar rankings maybe they’ll be able to mix things up (although we’d rather get back to our weekly rankings and everyone be able to meet on a Saturday morning instead).

Just off the podium

Only one other event scored under 20 and that was Walsall Arboretum, mainly down to Omar Ahmed and Hayley Carruthers quick course records of 14:12 and 15:58 respectively. Average time of 29:16 was still 12th overall and shows a quick course for anyone in the Midlands.

It was actually the excellent average times of 26:47 and 27:16 at Brighton & Hove and York parkruns, 2nd and 4th in the rankings, that propelled the two events, at opposite ends of England, into joint fifth. Obviously both are flat loops with plenty of space as both still draw in excellent numbers of parkrunners every weekend.

The full rankings are below and their male and female course records. Now time to get my thinking cap on for next week. If anyone knows how we can figure out the age-grade rankings then answers on a postcard.

With parkrun suspended in the UK this weekend, we thought a glance back at the 10 fastest parkruns of all time could be a good alternative to the weekly top ten.

Now what on earth are we going to write about next weekend? Leave it with us, we’ll come up with something. Or tweet some ideas at us, that always helps.

Your fastest male and female parkrun athletes of all time are…. unnecessary drum roll…. Andy Baddeley (13:48) and Charlotte Arter (15:49).

So Andy Baddeley, a 1500m Olympian and 13:20.99 5000m runner, is still the quickest of all time, way back from 2012 at the home of parkrun, Bushy Park. Little interesting fact to go alongside is that the 3:49 miler also has a double-first in Engineering from Cambridge University. Speedy and smart.

Your ladies parkrun world record holder is none the than Charlotte Arter. The GB distance star was at the rapido Cardiff parkrun in south Wales, and has run a handful of times that would have made this top ten. According to Wikipedia the Welsh star is originally from Cumbria, but is now the Welsh record holder for half marathon with a 69:40 at Barcelona Half last year.

The runners up

Alex Yee is a runner that always gets people excited, possibly linked to the fact my laptop tries to autocorrect to “Alex Yeehaw”. When he ran 14:05 a couple of years ago at Dulwich parkrun it was the second quickest all time and people loved it. Then the triathlon pro went one better and ran 13:57 at the same park. Could Yee break Baddeley’s record in the future?

When Dr. Jess Piasecki ran 15:51 and captained GB at the World XC Champs you might have felt that the Stockport Harrier could have relaxed for the rest of 2019, content in the knowledge that the year had been smashed, but the Exercise physiologist went on to run one of the performances of the year, winning Florence Marathon in 2:25:29, the third fastest British marathoner of all time.

Completing the podium

When Adam Clarke goes for a run at parkrun you now it’s going to be speedy. Another effort from Dulwich and the 2019 Armagh International winner (in 13:52 no less) probably lists his 14:00 parkrun on a similar level of achievement… or maybe slightly less than his simply staggering 13:39 5000m PB. Who knows?

The third fastest lady was also at Cardiff parkrun and Jenny Nesbitt is actually one of our Fast10 for 2020. Clocking 15:54 already in 2020, Nesbitt is clearly in great form and also had a road 10k best of 32:42 from Valencia in January this year. Another one who might challenge her training partner Arter’s parkrun best in the future.

A shout out must go to Clara Evans, training partner of Arter and Nesbitt, for posting the only time in this top ten that didn’t even come with the sweet joy of being first finisher on the day. On 1st February this year the seventh quickest UK parkrun all time was second on the day to Arter’s world best.

The fastest events?

142 men have broken 15 minutes at parkrun as of last weekend, which is pretty much on par with a good year at Armagh 5k international, whereas 137 ladies have broken 17 minutes, which feels like our equivalent result in the round up each week, with the time difference for fastest in each category the same as well (15:49 & 13:48 both just over 70 seconds quicker).

In a veritable who’s who of speedy parkruns, which event features most as well? Unsurprisingly Cardiff and Dulwich pop up repeatedly and the old school Bushy Park still has enough marks in the rankings to feature as the quickest with six, but it’s only a matter of time before the others surpass the home of parkrun.

Men’s top 10

1) parkrun: Bushy ’12

Jenny Nesbitt and Piers Copeland ran the fastest parkrun times in the UK this week (14th March).

You get the feeling this weekend could be the last results we’re going to write about for a while and maybe that’s why people headed down to their local parkrun for a burn-up this weekend.

Fastest female was Cardiff AC’s Jenny Nesbitt, putting into practice the words of her own Fast10 blog from this week. The Welsh international clocked 16:39 at the home of the women’s parkrun world record, Cardiff. So what happens when your plans don’t come to fruition? You head to parkrun and smash it out of the park.

Cardiff was obviously the place to be this morning with young Piers Copeland notching up a sub 15 minutes outing at the same event. The Wimborne AC starlet ran 14:54 and we’ll use it as an opportunity to throwback to this fine interview of Piers and Grace Copeland from last year.

It seems Cardiff wasn’t the only place for a race today as a strong group of women turned up at Burgess parkrun for a session it seems. With four runners making the top ten at the same event it’s the most featured today. Hannah Viner, a Highgate Harrier, was first home in a lightening 16:43 with club mate Yasmin Goater only 15 seconds back in 16:58 to grab third spot.

At Oka Hill parkrun Alex Leprêtre also ran brilliantly to go under 15 minutes with a 14:57. Leprêtre, who is difficult to find on Power of 10 if you forget the wee hat on the e, ran a massive 5k PB on the road in Armagh earlier this year with a 14:08. Good to have some PBs banked for all your winter hard work already before the cancelation of a lot of races.

James Cameron Hancock and Georgia Malir ran the fastest parkrun times in Ireland on Saturday 15th February

James Cameron Hancock made the most of his time in Ireland with this week’s fastest parkrun (15:49) less than 48 hours after clocking a new 5km PB of 15:08 in Armagh. It was an impressive double for the Croydon AC man who has started 2020 with a bang with back to back Surrey XC League Division two victories and an impressive 13th place finish at the competitive Surrey County XC Championships.

Another athlete on an extended visit to the emerald isle was GB international Georgia Malir who ran 17:52 at Belfast Victoria to finish as this weekend’s fastest woman. Malir ran an impressive 9:38 at Armagh 3km to finish 24th, an identical time and position to her 2019 performance! Amongst many excellent performances in 2019 Malir ran a big 5km PB of 16:23 at Ipswich Twilight 5km. She finished 5th at last month’s Yorkshire XC Champs.

A more familiar name in the Irish top 10 is Robert Frewen who, despite windy conditions, managed to clock a new parkrun PB of 16:26 at Malahide and finish with this week’s 2nd fastest time. Frewen ran 2:46:47 at Dublin Marathon in October, 58:56 at the AAI 10 mile championship in July and 28:04 at the Irish Runner 5 mile in June.

Kirsti Foster was another athlete competing in Armagh and was 2nd fastest woman at parkrun with 18:27 at Belfast Victoria this weekend. The under 17 athlete ran a fantastic 10:00 on Thursday to lead her age category and run 23 seconds faster than her track 3000m best. In winning the Northern Ireland & Ulster Age Group Championship 1500m this month Foster also moved to 3rd u/17 in the UK with her time of 4:40.20.

Orienteering specialist Josh O’Sullivan-Hourihan was the third fastest man this weekend with 16:28 at Ormeau. Josh was a member of the Donore team who picked up a gold medal at the National Intermediate XC last weekend where he finished 7th overall.

Rounding off a trio of women who raced in Armagh, Rachel Friend was the third fastest woman at parkrun with 18:43 at Waterworks. Friend finished 38th on Thursday night clocking 9:50 and was a bronze medallist at the recent England Athletics 5-Mile Championships at Alsager.

Jonothan Kay and Nicole Taylor ran the fastest parkrun times in the UK this week (15th February).

Tonbridge AC star Nicole Taylor was the fastest female at parkrun this weekend with a 17:17 at Malling parkrun. Taylor has already won the Sussex county XC champs and a wonderful second at the southern champs at Parliament Hill, so 2020 is flying.

Jonothan Kay, who’s full name on the parkrun website is “Jonothan Kay Six times a week”, was the fastest male with a 14:58 at Stretford parkrun. We’re not sure if this is simply how many times a week Jonothan is running or it covers another aspect of his life, but whatever it is, it’s working. The 3:48 1500m has kicked off his middle distance track season this year with a 3:51 win at the Northern indoor 1500m champs.

Kiera Brady-Jones of Wirral AC was the second quickest female with a 17:24 at Birkenhead parkrun in Merseyside. The U17 youngster started the year with a win at the indoor 800m Northern championships in 2:12.29, a win at the Merseyside XC Champs and a sixth at the northern champs.

parkrun regular Seyfu Jamaal is no stranger to the top ten and ran 15:18 at Finsbury Park this Saturday morning to put the London Heathside athlete in second place. At Linwood parkrun Guy Evans-Haggerty was 11 seconds behind with a 15:29 for the triathlete.

Reading AC’s Jessica Gibbon was the third fastest lady, who ran 17:29 at Maidenhead parkrun. Much like the rest of the top ranked athletes Gibbon has been busy on the cross country and a win at the Southern XC Champs at Parliament Hill is something an athlete will remember for the rest of their lives.

With a huge amount of endurance athletes at Armagh international 3k and 5k races this week we expected a few athletes to run a bit slower this weekend, but such is the strength in depth in British endurance running we still have a huge bunch of string runners hitting parkrun on Saturday morning too.

Daire Bermingham was comfortably clear at the top this week with his 15:30 at Malahide. In his time in the States Bermingham set the college record in the indoor mile (4:08.44) for Stony Brook and finished third in the mile at the America East Indoor Championships.

Bronagh Kearns was the fastest woman at parkrun this weekend taking nearly a minute off the course record at New Cross with 18:03 in what was her first parkrun. Kearns was a bronze medallist at the 2019 National 5km Championships.

Adam Ferris ran the second fastest parkrun time this weekend with 16:03 at Waterworks. Ferris was a member of the u/20 Northern Irish team that finished 3rd at the Irish Celtic International and Home International XC. Ferris set a new 5000m PB of 15:16.51 whem winning the Ulster Schools’ Championships last year.

Peter Donnelly is a new comer to distance running and he ran a big parkrun PB of 16:26 at City Park to finish as the third fastest man this week. Donnelly, who only has performances logged for 2019, progressed from a 37:44 at Laganside 10km in September to 34:27 at Seeley Cup 10K in November, some untapped potential there we suspect!

Rosses AC athlete Amy Greene than 19:08 at Dungloe parkrun to cross the line first overall at Dungloe parkrun and to set her new parkrun PB. The under 17 athlete just edged out Helen McCready who finished 2nd overall in 19:09. Amy Greene was awarded the Northern Ireland & Ulster u17 Mountain Running Athlete of the Year in 2019.

Charlotte Arter and Paul Graham ran the fastest parkrun times in the UK this week (1st February).

Dulwich parkrun: We’ve been dominating the parkrun rankings recently.

Cardiff parkrun: Hold my beer…

Charlotte Arter showed her international class with a new fastest parkrun in the world this weekend. The Cardiff AC and GB star ran 15:49 at the fast south Wales event, with training partner Clara Evans only 15 seconds behind in 16:04.

After ending 2019 with a seventh place finish in the SPAR European XC Championships in Lisbon, Portugal, Arter opens 2020 with a blistering performance at parkrun. It’s not far off the Saucony athlete’s 15:39 5k best on the road or her 15:40.15 on the track for 5000m.

Clara Evans’ 16:04 actually brings her sixth on the UK all time parkrun rankings too and it’s only a matter of seconds away form her own 5k road best. What a way to start the year for the Welsh international. As we’ve said a lot recently British distance runner is in an exciting place with so much talent around.

There were some speedy chaps too

The men’s quickest performance of the week was also at Cardiff, with Paul Graham, a Pontypridd Roadents like Evans, running 14:50 and being one of three meant to break 15 minutes this week, the others being ever-present Seyfu Jamaal of London Heathside (14:55) and James McCrae of Hallamshire Harriers Sheffield AC (14:57), who was also at Cardiff.

It was a Welsh 1-2-3 for the ladies, with Alaw Beynon-Thomas running 17:07 at Llanelli Coast, which is a parkrun PB and comes off a strong 36:05 at Speedway 10k for fourth spot.

Alex Ediker and Lucy Reid ran the fastest parkrun times in the UK this week (18th January).

For the second week in a row the runners at Dulwich parkrun have knocked it out of the park. Six of the top 10 men and an additional runner in the top ten ladies means it’s seven overall for the fast and flat parkrun in SE London.

The fastest female though wasn’t at Dulwich, as Lucy Reid, a name we always see representing Tonbridge AC brilliantly in the road relays , ran 16:59 at The Leas parkrun in Minster.

Fastest male was at Dulwich though with Alex Ediker running 14:59, ahead of a slew of other sub-16 minute runners behind him. It marks a new parkrun best for the U20 and comes on the back of a strong performance at the Derbyshire / Nottinghamshire County Championships for cross country.

Just behind the Chesterfield & District AC athlete was Oliver Prior of Ashford AC. Prior is another U20 running a new parkrun best, by over a minute with a 15:13 time. Prior ran a 4:01.75 PB for 1500m in 2019 and looks to have started 2020 with an eye on another fast summer.

Second fastest lady this weekend was Stephie Pennycook of Fife AC. The Edinburgh Uni student ran close to her parkrun best of 17:16 (set back in 2016) but has quicker PBs over 5k on the road with a 16:22 at one of the popular Podium 5k events in Barrowford in 2018.

Completing a Dulwich podium for the men was Andrew Warburton, clocking 15:36. It’s a new parkrun best for the Notts AC/Herne Hill runner and also quicker than his 5k road and 5000m track best as well. 2020 might well be the year that the popular bread-maker updates both of those marks.

At Burgess parkrun there was a fine performance from Charlene Jacobs-Conradie, with a 17:39 for third fastest parkrun of the weekend. The Luton AC Masters runner had a phenomenal 2019 with a 2:46:48 marathon PB certainly one of several highlights. There was also a win at the Southern Athletics League Division 3N over 100m (in 14 seconds) so a great range of distances!

No prizes for guessing the quickest parkrun this week, with only a race between Daniel Hamilton and James Cameron Hancock, 15:37 and 15:39 respectively, stopping Dulwich filling all six top spots.

Brian Maher and Charlotte Ward ran the fastest parkrun times in Ireland this weekend (14th December)

Irish international and 2018 National 10k Champion Brian Maher topped the list of fastest parkrun times in Ireland this weekend with 15:24, 11 seconds outside his own course record at Kilkenny. With a 10000m PB of 29:44 and 5000m best of 14:12 Maher has been one of Ireland’s most familiar athletes over the last decade featuring at World and European XC Champs. The Kilkenny City Harrier was 13th at last month’s All Ireland XC Championships.

Charlotte Ward is a woman in great form in 2019 and she ran the fastest parkrun time by a woman this weekend with 18:38 at Belfast Victoria. Ward as set personal bests at 3km (9:59), 5km (17:15), 10km (36:30), 10 miles (60:08) and half marathon (79:30) in a stellar year so far. Most recently Ward was 7th at the Percy Pud 10km when setting her 36:30 best. Whilst listed as a City of Hull athlete by parkrun we believe Charlotte is a Hallamshire Harrier.

Another Kilkenny City Harrier, Thomas Hayes, gave Brian Maher a run for his money at Kilkenny parkrun and finished second fastest man this week running 15:33 and taking 12 seconds off his previous parkrun best set over three years ago. Hayes ran 2:25:04 at Frankfurt Marathon in October and has had a fine year setting PBs at Venloop Half Marathon (65:49), Fast Friday 10000m (30:26) and Armagh 5km (14:29).

19:17 was enough to ensure Edel Reilly was first home overall at Castlebar parkrun and finish as seocnd fastest woman this week. Reilly ran 37:52 to set a new PB at Belleek 10k earlier this month and was 2nd at the Hollymount 6km road race in November clocking 23:25.

In his first every parkrun outing Evan Keane ran 16:07 to clock the second fastest time ever on the Waterford Nature course and finish as this week’s 3rd fastest man. Well known as a junior Keane was 3rd in the junior 3000m at 2018 National Senior Championships.

Lexi Hopping ran 19:18 at Malahide parkrun to finish as this week’s third fastest runner. We don’t know much about Lexi, other than she has a parkrun PB of 18:34 and that her name isn’t an easy one to google search!
