Belgian runner Jana Van Lent has broken the European Record for 10k held by Eilish McColgan.
Jana Van Lent has run an impressive 30:09 at the Prom Classic 10km in Nice this morning (Sunday 4 January). Subject to ratification, that improves the European Record held by Eilish McColgan by ten seconds.
Eilish ran 30:19 at the Great Manchester 10k in May 2022. That time came in a female-only field; European Athletics maintains records for both single- and mixed-gender fields. The mark for the latter was 30:21 by Paula Radcliffe in February 2003.
Van Lent’s time was in a mixed-gender race. It’s a 68 second PB (Feb 2025) and 65 seconds faster than her track PB (June 2025). Her 5k split (if accurate) on the out-and-back course was 14:42. That is considerably faster than the Belgian Record for a standalone 5k (15:21) and Van Lent’s PB (15:24). The European Record is 14:32, by Nadia Battocletti.
It comes off the back of a hugely impressive 2025 for the Belgian runner. She broke the 5000m Belgian Record three times last summer, one coming at the London Diamond League. She is the first Belgian to run sub-15:00 and her PB now stands at 14:37.47.
Jana Van Lent’s PBs at the start of 2025 compared to now:
- 5000m: 15:21.46 to 14:37.47
- 5k: 15:24 to 14:42 (split)
- 10000m: 31:59.56 to 31:14.22
- 10k: 31:53 to 30:09
Eilish McColgan competes at the fast 10K Valencia Ibercaja next Sunday where she has a chance to reclaim her record.
