Hayley Carruthers runs under 16 minutes for parkrun again, taking a second off her best for the event. Once again at Walsall Arboretum the Birchfield Harrier followed the excellent pacing of coach Dan Robinson to equal the fourth fastest parkrun ever run.

Carruther’s 15:58 was almost a minute quicker than second place time and wasn’t far off making the men’s top ten.

Another parkrun regular, Paul Martelletti, went on holiday to Hove Prom to break 15 minutes on the fast south coast course. Not quite as speedy as Jake Wightman’s recent course record for the event, Martelletti is one of the most frequent names on the parkrun fastest times section.

Elizabeth Davies of Springfield Striders was second placed female with an excellent 16:49. Quicker than the athlete’s parkrun, 5000m and 5k best, it’s another 2019 mark set by Davies, who is having a fine year.

Kurt Taylor of Bristol & West AC ran 15:00 flat at Southsea parkrun in the same year as new personal bests in 1500m and 3000m of 3:54.52 and 8:26.47.

New tables at Eden parkrun could mean that faster times are due there in the future, but this weekend Emma Stepto chose Penrose parkrun 25 miles down the road to run a solid 17:58.

Once again Birchfield Harriers were out in force at parkrun with Carruthers leading three club mates to being the fastest club in our rankings. If that were a thing, I think they’d probably win it every week.

The Championships, taking place on the 1 September 2019, will be the first edition of the event since 2016, when Great Britain & Northern Ireland won women’s team gold and men’s team silver on that occasion.

Hannah Oldroyd (Ribble Valley Harriers) was a member of that gold medal winning team three years ago, and returns to the fold in 2019, joined by four women seeking to recreate the success of 2016.

Oldroyd will be joined by Olympian Aly Dixon who makes her first international appearance over the distance. After representing her country at World, European and Commonwealth level, this will be her first outing over the 50km distance compared to the marathon [42km].

Wakefield’s Julie Briscoe, Danielle Nimmock (City of Norwich), Helen Davies (Ipswich Jaffa) – the latter revised her marathon personal best to 2:34.08 in Brighton last month – complete the women’s quintet.

The men’s team includes Paul Martelletti (Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets) and Lee Grantham (East Cheshire) who have previously competed in British squads.

Dan Nash (Cardiff) and Alex Milne (Enfield & Haringey) are both selected after lowering their career bests over the marathon distance in recent weeks, posting times of 2:18.51 and 2:20.08 respectively. Kevin Rojas (Brighton & Hove) will also receive his first British vest after the call-up.

The step up

The team has a good mix of experienced ultra runners who have competed over the 100km distance and promising new comers to the discipline like Dixon.

“It may only be a handful of extra miles,” says Fast Running ultra running expert Robbie Britton, “but how you approach the race can be quite difference. Fuelling takes on a much larger role and the risk of totally running out of energy is there for the final section.

“It’s really exciting to see athletes like Aly Dixon and the standard of ultra running worldwide is rising. Even Des Linden, last year’s Boston Marathon winner, was talking in a podcast about stepping up. Maybe we’ll see some British stars with great marathon speed doing excellent things in the ultra world. It’s happening already.”

After a short hiatus to run an excellent 2:17:29 at the London Marathon Paul Martelletti returns to his seat atop the parkrun weekly rankings. Running 14:43 at Victoria Dock parkrun, the marathoner is back in action and wowing parkrun attendees across London once again.

Lauren Cooper is hitting 2019 in style. After a 36:28 PB over 10k at the Speedway 10k in January, the Welsh athlete has knocked her parkrun best out of the park. With a 16:58 at Bryn Bach parkrun Cooper has even gone under her 5k and 5000m marks so hopefully we will see a parkrun best tune into a 5k PB in the near future.

George King is another athlete who has been taking 2019 by storm and posting Pbs for fun. His 15:01 at Hackney Marhes is a new parkrun best for King and comes on the back of a 31:00 at the Great Bristol 10k on the 5th May. It was only in March that the Tom Craggs coached runner ran 67:39 for a breakthrough half marathon performance at Bath Half and was apparently “a little tired” after this morning’s solid effort.

Normally if two runners post the same time we give them equal positions, as you can’t race at different events and we don’t do photo finishes across the UK. But at Worthing parkrun it seems Maisie Trafford and Leah Harris had a bit of a tear up and both ran 17:10 at the flat south coast event.

It was a parkrun best for both athletes, although Harris only had a 20:20 from 2011 and recently ran an excellent 34:54 at Chichester Priory 10k. Trafford also ran a 35:40 at Chichester and this may well have been a rematch for the U23s.

Only Worthing and Worcester Pitchcroft (the Richardson siblings always ensure their parkrun features twice) were in the rankings more than once.

Such is the frequency the pair feature we’ve considered just creating a draft post celebrating them once again topping the Fast Running rankings for parkrun each week. It’d be correct more often than not. But do not worry, we’ll keep up the work to let you know who were the fastest in your local parks each weekend.

Hayley Carruthers was celebrating her birthday by running 16:16 at Walsall Arboretum parkrun with her coach Dan Robinson, although Carruthers’ fancy dress was of a much higher standard. The Birchfield Harrier is not far from her goal race of the London Marathon at the end of April and it will be exciting to see how the England marathoner fares in the capital.

It was an unusually short session for New Zealander Paul Martelletti this weekend with only a total of 14 miles surrounding his 14:40 parkrun blowout and course record at Hackney Marshes. The 2:16 marathoner has a huge level of versatility and has represented Great Britain over the 100km distance and has a 5000m best of 14:19.20 form the track last summer.

Second placed female was Welsh runner Elinor Kirk who ran 34:47 for 10k at the competitive Brighton Marathon festival just last weekend. Kirk is a 2:36 marathoner who finished 15th at the Commonwealth Games in hot conditions on the Gold Coast last year.

There were four male runners under 15 minutes this week with Marelletti joined by Tom Merson of Exmouth Harriers (14:44),  Irish international Paul Pollock (14:51) and Kent AC’s Jon Gilbert (14:59). Runner and coach Pollock is actually offering coaching for runners attempting to break three hours for the marathon with his DreamRun Dublin applications still open here.

Six female runners were under 17 minutes this week with a host of international standard athletes taking to parkrun, possibly as part of tapering for bigger races ahead.Grace Carson ran 16:46 at MUSA Cooktown, Annabel Gummow posted 16:48at Ellenbrook Fields, Bryony Haines had a strong 16:54 at the fast Cannon Hill event in Birmingham and Tonbridge AC’s Nicole taylor nipped under with a 16:59 at her home event in Tonbridge.

Last week’s second placed female Fionnuala Ross was back in action this week to win the Scottish 10,000m title on the track. For all the action in Scotland our report is here.

The fastest pair on New Year’s Day (January 1) were Peter Le Grice and Hayley Carruthers, but Carruthers didn’t want to settle for just one appearance in the rankings.

The Birchfield Harrier ran 16:24 at Brueton parkrun and then 16:33 at Kingsbury Water parkrun. Carruther’s coach Dan Robinson seems to have run both with the athlete as well.

As the results are mixed with results from the weekend it is difficult to be certain, but it seems the England marathoner ran the two quickest female times of the day, with only Grace Brock’s 16:32 from Saturday in between. A good double session for the parkrun fan.

Peter Le Grice, running at Penrose parkrun in Cornwall, ran an excellent 14:38 and, even with his quick time, might have struggled to make it to another parkrun in time for a double. Penrose parkrun is the furthest south of any parkrun on the British mainland.

parkrun regular Paul Marteletti was the first finisher at both Peckham Rye and Catford parkruns and features as fourth and ninth fastest parkrun of the day. Carruthers and Marteletti were the only two who featured twice in the top 10.

The marathoner and ultra distance athlete ran 15:08 at Peckham Rye and 15:35 at Catford, which was his first time at the south east London event. It was a course record for both events too.

Swansea Harrier’s Matthew Rees also made a solid double attempt with his 15:32 at Cardiff parkrun being good enough for seventh, whilst his 16:33 at Barry Island was also a first finisher run too.

Eighth placed Aston Perrin of Long Eaton RC also made it two ‘first finishers’ with 15:33 at Northampton parkrun and 16:17 at Kettering.

Hayley Carruthers ran 15:59 at the Walsall Arboretum parkrun to record the fastest women’s time across the UK on Saturday (December 22).

It was the first time under 16 minutes for the ever improving Birchfield Harrier, who was just four seconds away from the women’s parkrun best. It was also nearly two minutes quicker than the time Carruthers ran on the same weekend last year.

On the men’s side, there were five runners under 15 minutes as people are coming home for Christmas and invariably hitting their local parkruns.

Christmas Day could be a super fast one as people escape the family mayhem in the morning to get a good run in. Who will be the Christmas number ones on Tuesday?

Kieran Clements was the fastest of the bunch with a 14:32 at Kesgrave parkrun in Suffolk. Taking two seconds from the speedster’s own course record on the Ipswich course.

The 13:53 5000m man posted the run on Strava and described the course as a little “muddy, windy and rough underfoot”. Considering there is a 180 degree turn on the course as well that’s a cracking time.

The other four men under 15 minutes included an Olympian, a Gibraltarian middle distance runner and a British/New Zealand ultra runner on a long run.

Paul Martelletti actually ran faster than his top ranking time from last week, but was knocked down to fourth place by the competitive turn out on Saturday. The marathon and ultra runner was in the middle of a 16 mile training run so hopefully won’t be too dismayed.

Second placed lady was Zoe Wassell, the youngster who ran so well over cross country in Spain earlier this winter. The GB youth international ran 17:01 for the second fastest ladies time of the week, but was over a minute behind Carruthers.

Second placed male was middle distance specialist Jake Wightman, who was training fast around the track at Loughborough earlier this week, but was down at Dulwich parkrun in London by the weekend to fly around the flat and fast course in South East London.

Chloe Richardson was the third place female and thus has family bragging rights on Christmas Day as her brother William was only fifth in the male rankings. Both made the news in 2017 as dual winners of the Birmingham half marathon.

The AB Training group in Sussex made an en mass outing to Worthing parkrun but only times of 15:09 and 15:11 made the top 10, although 10 runners broke 16 minutes at the one event. The power of the group there again.

Both Dulwich and Cannon Hill Birmingham parkruns featured three times this week so they can share the fastest parkrun for the week. It seems the Midlands featured heavier than usual at the weekend, maybe everyone is returning home for Christmas to the middle of England.

It was a New Zealander, who has represented Great Britain as an ultra runner, who ran the fastest parkrun of 14:50 on Saturday (December 15).

High mileage marathoner Paul Martelletti posted the sub 15 minute showing at Dulwich parkrun, followed closely by Benjamin Toomer in 15:07 at the same event.

Joshua Cowperthwaite, of the north east of England, also ran under 15 minutes and equalled his parkrun best of 14:59 at Albert parkrun in Middlesborough. The time was good enough for second in the world listings and might have been good enough for the top spot in most weeks.

Emma Waudby recently went under 17 minutes for the first time and the parkrun regular ran 17:28 at her useful Heslington event this weekend. The Pocklington runner is only in the 16-17 age category but has seen great improvements since she started the weekly times trials and joining her local club. A great example of both working together to produce a promising youngster.

The fastest overseas parkrun of the weekend was 15:10 by Andy Good at Hagley, New Zealand and there were actually two performances from the Christchurch event as Roxane Shahtahmasebi was the first female finisher in 17:56.

The quickest overseas female run was in Canada, where Laura Bernard ran 17:46, which is a very good result from a Canadian parkrun in Kitchener, Ontario.

As well as having the two fastest parkrun times, the UK had 14 runners in the top ten lists in total. Recent weeks have seen much faster runs in Australia as the whole country gets ready for the summer season. What will next weekend bring?

After the previous weekend of other nations dominating the global parkrun rankings, British athletes decided to fight back. Elsey Davis and Paul Martelletti topped both the UK and Global rankings with lightening quick times for the 5k time trail.

Davis, building up to cross country relays for Preston Harriers, only added Wolverhampton parkrun into her week on a drive across the UK. Such is the class of the Helen Clithroe coached runner that the 16:54 posted was good enough to list as the fastest in the UK and overseas.

Emma Waudby, a top ten regular, also ran an excellent 17:09 to secure second spot globally, albeit joined by Ireland’s Catherina McKiernan who regularly tops the Irish parkrun list.

Regular racers

Paul Martelletti often includes parkrun with his high mileage training and the 2:16 marathoner has been the number one runner on numerous occasions. This was only one week after running 2:27:02 to win the Yorkshire marathon.

Matthew Cox, of the Australian Run Crew, was only two seconds behind, running a fine 15:04 at the Panania parkrun in Sydney. This also comes a week after a marathon where Cox ran 2:21:34 at the Melbourne marathon.

Third placed Gregory Jayasuriya only ran a 10km cross country race the weekend before, finishing second in 33:13 at the 10km North Yorkshire & South Durham League meet.

Featuring three times Bushy parkrun was once again the fastest course for the top ten listings.

Exactly a minute quicker than Jo Williams was in top spot last week, Elsey Davis ran a fine 16:54 at Wolverhampton parkrun. In true parkrun tourist style the Cornish athlete was returning home to the southwest and couldn’t resist a quick blast in the Wets Midlands.

Next up for the Helen Clitheroe coached athlete is the Cross Country relays for Preston Harriers and we expect Davis to continue her fine 2018 form.

Paul Martelletti is no stranger to the parkrun rankings and regularly includes the five kilometre time trials as part of his high mileage training. His 15:02 at Victoria Dock parkrun was quick enough to hold off second place by eight seconds and may put him atop the global rankings this weekend

Special mention to Paul Navesey of Crawley AC. This is the first week that the former British 100km champion has remembered to bring his barcode to parkrun and an excellent 15:21 put him in fourth place. Coached by Alison Benton, Navesey is preparing for a PB attempt at Frankfurt marathon.

It seems there was a canicross race at Brockenhurst parkrun as Sharon Singer and Alice Rudd were just one second apart at the finish. 16:58 and 16:59 times were still piped by Davis in first place, but that’s some fast running even for canicross.

Canicross results are not included in the top ten, but Jason Pascoe’s 13:51 at Penrose parkrun is also well worth a mention. It’s the super quick time and the ‘Active Dog Cornwall’ club name that gives it away.

Molly Renfer and Kim Fawke both ran 45 seconds quicker this week than last. But as the standards rose it was only good enough to hold fifth and sixth place respectively for two consecutive weeks. Hats off to both athletes for bringing their A game to parkrun this week!

It was a day of nation-wide sprint finishes for the men as fifth, seventh and ninth were all tied by two athletes. Yet all were at different parkruns across the United Kingdom.

Bushy parkrun was the most featured with two males and one female gracing the rankings. If you’re looking for a parkrun PB then it’s a great place to go visit one Saturday morning.

Jonathan Poole and Any Clements were quickest in Britain and the world this week. Serpentine RC’s Poole ran a swift 14:52 at Gunnersbury parkrun in West London and Kent AC’s Clements posted a 16:57 at the pan flat Dulwich parkrun in South East London.

The third-ranked runner was Rob Samuel, a Welsh athlete who has represented Great Britain at the World Mountain Running Championships. Samuel, a 2:21 marathoner, ran 15:05 at St. Anne’s parkrun in Raheny, a northern suburb of Dublin. Samuel topped the Irish parkrun rankings this week.

The only other overseas parkrun result to make it into the male top 10 really did sneak in! Three results were joint 10th and if the two runners who forgot their barcodes in the UK this weekend hadn’t, they would have missed the cut.

Both named Brad, the runners from Canada and Australia tied Luke Pollard’s 15:25. Brad Kahlefeldt of the wonderfully named Wagga Wagga road runners and unattached Brad Bickley both ran excellent times to make it onto the top 10.

The women’s top 10

Only two runners made it into the female top 10 from outside of the UK. Usually a strong Australian showing means that several female athletes are interspersed in the rankings, but only Australian marathon runner Melanie Panayiotou features this week.

Panayiotou ran in the 2014 Commonwealth Games marathon and was eighth place in 2:35:01. The veterinarian works at the Steve Irwin Zoo in Australia.

Maria Nomenina of Russia ran 17:42 at Ryazan Oreshek parkrun to place eighth. It wasn’t possible to find any more information about the Russian athlete, although that could be down to Fast Running‘s lack of Russian language skills.

All the female times in the top 10 were under 18 minutes so it was a fast week globally.

The UK was the strongest by a fair distance this week. Paul Pollock ran 15:09 and Isobel Clark was just two minutes behind in 17:09 at the Bushy parkrun with Sophie Crumly running 17:54.

The Bushy parkrun was also the most featured Saturday morning 5k. The event has St. Mary’s University nearby and is a well-known area for attracting top athletes to train. It might not be worth travelling from Australia for a quick time, but certainly worth a trip across London.
