Rutherford, who won the Commonwealth long jump title four years ago in Glasgow, said withdrawing from the England Commonwealth team was “not a decision that’s been easy” to make.

The Olympic and world gold medallist, who has made a comeback from an ankle ligament injury, has decided it best to gradually introduce himself into competition after a period away from competitive athletics.

“In previous years I’ve attended major championships without a good training block behind me and my performance has suffered as a result,” the 31-year-old said. “I really would have loved to have been involved with the team. The Commonwealth Games have been brilliant over the years for me and my two medals from three Games have been highlights for me.

“I am planning on easing myself back into competition, possibly indoors, and then building to the summer season.

“I want to wish the team all the very best out in Australia.”

400m hurdler Jacob Paul has been selected to replace Rutherford and will make his first Commonwealth Games appearance.

Rutherford was quick to congratulate Paul, tweeting: “I’m thrilled that Team England have replaced me with Jacob Paul. It gives another up and coming athlete a chance to break through on the senior stage. Something I was lucky enough to do back in 2006. Good luck to everyone. COME ON ENGLAND!”

An IAAF Diamond League meeting, the Müller Anniversary Games has extra significance this year, with the IAAF World Championships being staged on the same track just four weeks later.

The star-studded meeting will be the final competition for many of the world’s top athletes ahead of the IAAF World Championships.

Rutherford said: “I can’t wait for the Müller Anniversary Games, it will be a great opportunity for me to test myself ahead of the IAAF World Championships”.

Rutherford retained his European title last summer and followed that with an Olympic bronze medal in Rio.

The former Olympic champion is determined to be at his best outdoors this season, particularly at the Müller Anniversary Games, where he believes the level of competition, atmosphere and excitement are second to none.

“It’s always very special for me to compete in London, I’m sure it will be an amazing send off for the British team ahead of the World Championships. I’m a competitive person so I have missed being out there competing in the last few months, but I’m raring to go and looking forward to getting back on the track soon.” said Rutherford.

Niels de Vos, Chief Executive of British Athletics, added: “The Müller Anniversary Games will be the stand-out Diamond League event in the world this year. Its proximity to the IAAF World Championships means that it matters more than ever. All the world’s best athletes will want to compete so fans can look forward to seeing the best talent in the world all together on one amazing afternoon of athletics.”
