Dina Asher-Smith, Elaine Thompson, Dafne Schippers and Marie-Josée Ta Lou have all been confirmed for an all-star 60m field at the Müller Indoor Grand Prix Glasgow.

Britain’s fastest woman ever over 100m and 200m, Asher-Smith will face formidable opposition on February 25, following the announcement that double Olympic champion Thompson and double world silver medallist Ta Lou have been added to the 60m field, with Dutch star Schippers’ participation previously announced.

Fans will hope that all four can make it through from the two qualifying heats and then do battle for victory in the Glasgow final.

Jamaica’s Thompson will be intent on a strong start to 2018 following a shock fifth-place finish over 100m at 2017’s World Championships in London.

“Women’s sprinting is hugely competitive, as we saw in London last year, and when you take into account the skill of starting quickly, the 60m is really an event in which a lot of girls have the opportunity to shine and take the win, said Thompson. “I have no doubt that we will see some incredible performances over 60m at the Müller Indoor Grand Prix Glasgow.”

Asher-Smith, who finished fourth in the 200m and played a pivotal role in the British women’s world 4x100m silver last summer, said: “The last two years have been crazy but 2018 really is no different, so to have the opportunity to compete in front of a British crowd at the best indoor meeting in the world next month is really exciting.

“My aim over the next few years is to keep improving and turn my 4th and 5th places into podium finishes. The races in Glasgow are sure to be great.”

Ivory Coast’s Ta Lou, who broke into the podium places in fine style at London 2017 said: “2017 was unbelievable for me, but aside from anything else it left me hungry for more success. I have now sampled what it is like to compete in the UK many times, and I can’t wait to come to Glasgow in only a month’s time and compete at the world’s best indoor athletics meet.

“2018 is another exciting year for athletics and for me personally – in Glasgow, I really hope to capitalise on my performances at London 2017 against the tough competition I face in the likes of Elaine (Thompson), Dafne (Schippers) and Dina (Asher-Smith).”

Flying Dutchwoman Dafne Schippers successfully retained her 200m title, as Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith finished fourth with a remarkable season’s best at the World Championships in London.

Dafne Schippers started brilliantly firing round the bend with Marie-Josee Ta Lou not giving an inch. As they came down home straight level the defending champion just pipped the Ivorian star to seal her second 200m world title, crossing the line 0.03 ahead of Ta Lou in 22.05.

28 year-old Ta Lou took silver in 22.05, with Bahamas’ Shaunae Miller-Uibo sealing bronze in 22.15.

The 200m gold brings the Dutch star’s medal haul to two at this World Championships adding to her 100m bronze from Sunday.

While Ta Lou, made it an impressive two silver medals at this year’s championships, coming ever so close to gold on both occasions, with the Ivorian’s 200m final time 22.08 a new national record.

Schippers, the Olympic silver medalist said: “It was very important to win, I’ve worked so hard and last year was not the easiest for me. I changed everything and got a new coach, so I’m very happy.

“It’s great, especially with the gold medal. My secret is enjoying the sport and enjoying my racing. I feel a little bit nervous starting out, but I’m a final runner and I’m grateful for the experience now it’s over.”

Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith finished fourth, running an tremendous race to clock 22.22, another season’s best for the 21-year-old.

To finish seven hundredths of a second of a medal after a foot break earlier this year, more than shows that Britain’s fastest woman is back to her best.

Asher-Smith said: “I’m frustrated, but quite happy to have run like that having broken my foot this year.

“I was so happy to be here and just told myself to go out fast.

“The crowd were getting louder and louder so I knew I was doing well, and I kept going for it.”

It was a shock US one-two in the women’s 3000m steeplechase final.

USA’s Emma Coburn clinched the gold from compatriot Courtney Frerichs, with Kiyeng Jepkemoi of Kenya taking bronze.

Coburn won the race with a superb water jump, sprinting to cross the line in 9:02.58, also setting an American and championship record in the process.

The 26-year-old is the first American to win gold in a global steeplechase championship since 1952.

Frerichs’s silver medal time of 9:03.77 was a personal best for the 24-year-old American.
